Canada Boulder Hut Trip

C A N A D A

As temperatures increased and no new snow fell in Idaho I continued my journey to the Great Up North Canada. The last two seasons the BridgerBrigade crew has made our way to Kimberly, BC to do a seven day Backcountry Hut trip within the Purcell range.

Here is some information about the hut:

Mark and Sarah Yancy are a family of four that has taken great pride in owning and operating the Boulder Hut Lodge for over 9 years now. We strongly believe in maintaining our old school roots while staying current to the interest in more aggressive backcountry skiing.  For the “purist” at heart, we offer a down-to-earth, no frills, backcountry skiing experience.
Sarah and I are caretakers of a long-standing tradition of stewardship at Boulder Creek. We have instilled in our kids, Grace and Alden, the ethics of stewardship, a passion for places wild, and a love of adventure. We are a family that shares the same desire – to share this incredible backcountry experience with others.
As owners and operators of the Boulder Hut, Sarah and I began our careers over 17 years ago as professional ski patrollers. Sarah has worked seasonally in the mountains of Alaska, Washington and Idaho doing everything from training an avalanche rescue dog to building and designing trail as a trail crew member and surveyor to monitoring and mitigating backcountry impacts on public lands. Mark is ACMG certified, Professional member of the CAA and has extensive training in avalanche forecasting as a Professional Ski Patroller and ski guide.  Over 25 years of exploring the mountains has given Mark a true appreciation for adventure. When Mark isn’t charting routes through the mountains, he’s navigating blueprints and furniture designs in his accomplished career as a builder and craftsman.
With friends and the extended family of backcountry enthusiasts, we are painstakingly re-building the Boulder Hut to preserve its historic role in British Columbia’s rich history of backcountry lodges. Boulder Hut is a living, growing piece of the ski community in the Purcell Mountains of Southeast British Columbia. Here, we make our home every winter and welcome our backcountry skiing guests as family! http://boulderhutadventures.com

This trip each year seems to get better and better. The hut itself is in just a remote place that its hard to put in words how special it really is. The whole time you are there it seems like you're in a dream cause you wake up every morning put your skins on and point to a spot you want to go and off you go. The terrain there is so playful it has everything for every type of skier. It has big narley lines, jump spots, pillow lines, and mellow mini golf lines. We had great conditions this season with low avalanche danger, which was so sweet because the crew was all able to get on some bigger lines that we were looking at last season. This trip was so much fun and the crew we had out at the hut just made it that much better. Axel Peterson, MacKenna Peterson, Kyle Taylor, Rob Raymond, Karl Fostvedt, Ben Goertzen, Ty Guarino, Mandy Torgerson, and Lars Ayers made up our crew so much diversity in everyones skiing made for a great mixture of ideas to ski all of this amazing terrain. Here are some photos of the adventure.

IDAHO IN FEBURARY

From Wyoming to the Homeland
Although the conditions were holding up in Wyoming, some warm weather came in and made me think it was time to continue on with my journey. With a lot of different options to choose from I decided to try and figure out where the storm was going to hit next. Snow was starting to fall in a few places, but I realized that I live this lavish lifestyle on a ski-bum budget, so I decided to start looking at zones closer to my hometown, Ketchum, Idaho. I checked out the weather forecast for the Sawtooth Mountain Range and found that large amounts of snow was heading that way. So I loaded up the car and sent it back to my home town of Ketchum, ID. The night I arrived back in town it snowed 26 inches with stable avalanche conditions. It was time to send! Some of the best days of the season where had in the Idaho backcountry that week. New Zones, good friends, and a new snowmobile. Life couldn’t get any better!
While I was in Ketchum, I was able to meet up with one of my best friends, Banks Gilberti, and film for his web-series Adventures In Transitions. It was so rad to be able to hang out with Banks, ski around our hometown resort together and get shots for his webisode series. I was also able to meet up with my buddy Tal Roberts, who is a well established photographer who lives the Ketchum area. I was able to grab some great shots with him as well. All in all, it was an amazing trip spent in the homeland. Here are some photos from the adventure.

Montana to Wyoming January

M O N T A N A
It was hard leaving Idaho after such an amazing December, but the adventures must  continue. After leaving Idaho, I headed off to Bozeman, MT to meet up with all the boys of BridgerBrigade. I always have a great time being with such a diverse, talented group of guys who love to #FKNSNDR! I was lucky enough to explore new zones on my snowmobile and was even luckier to ski some deep pow. Montana is a special place and sometimes I find it hard to explain to people how much I truly love it. For me, Montana is a dream place for skiers because it offers all types of terrain from gnarly lines, mini golf, to jump spots and the best part is that all of these zones are within a very short distance to each other. Towards the end of my stay in Montana, the temperature went up and the winds picked up making backcountry conditions quite unstable, so I packed up my rig and headed South to Jackson.

I was able to meet up with some buddies who I don’t get to ski with too often. These three rad locals, Justin Mayers, Blaine Gallivan, and Amon Barker, were able to take me to some of their go-to spots in the Wyoming backcountry. Such a gratifying experience to get out with these dudes and explore some new zones. Here are some of the photos from the trip.

IDAHOME

Was able to get home this Holiday for a solid couple weeks and ended up skiing some of the best snow I have skied at my home town of SunValley, ID in a long time. I was able to meet up with some great friends and do some amazing exploring just north of town on Galena Pass and in the Sawtooth National Forest as well. Here are some videos and pictures of my travels to Idaho...

New Season New Goals

Every season I tell myself go into the season with no expectations and just work to your fullest potential and something good will come. My hard work last season definitely paid off for me and was able to pick up some new amazing sponsors. I just want to thank Mike Nick and Jason Mousseau at Orage for having me be able to be a part of a company that I have looked up to since I first got into skiing. Another huge thanks to Ali Kent over at Pow Gloves. I can't thank all of you enough for all the support!

Once again going into this season with no expectations and see how she goes. Although this season I defiantly want to hit some more booters and ski some more narly lines. Cheers to all hope your season is filled with lots of Pow...

Bomb Snow TV S2 E3- Taming Strange

After a long drive back from Canada we headed back to Montana to see how the snow conditions where? We ended up hitting the jackpot and skied some of the best pow of the whole ski season. The crew spilt up and most of us stayed in Montana where the other part went to Crested Butte for the Freesking World Tour. Between skiing in the Northern Bridgers to making a week trip to Shook Kitty we were able to get some great shots. The trip to Shook Kitty was so rad because one of my best friends Tai Barrymore who I don't get to ski with much anymore due to his and my traveling schedule rallied up with the crew and skied some endless pow with us. Couldn't have asked for a better crew and a better time up there it was way to much fun! Here is what we collected for our third episode of Bomb Snow TV S2 E3- Taming Strange a really sick colab edit with some of our snowboard buds. I hope you all like it!
